A must-see marvel of nature conservation and a premier destination for eco-travelers in southern Sri Lanka.
Description
A member of UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves, Kanneliya Forest Reserve is an ancient tropical rainforest forming part of the Kanneliya-Dediyagala-Nakiyadeniya (KDN) complex. Located约 35 km northwest of Galle, this spectacular site represents one of the last remaining large lowland rainforest tracts in Sri Lanka. Known as a "super biodiversity hotspot," it features remarkable endemic flora and fauna, stunning waterfalls, and pristine jungle trails. Home to over 200 plant species found nowhere else on Earth, Kanneliya combines geology, ecology, and adventure into an unforgettable experience for nature lovers.

Waterfalls (Anagimale, Narangas Ella, etc.): The trek rewards visitors with cool plunge pools and dramatic cascades hidden deep within the forest.

Learn the Ecology: Discover the critical role of lowland rainforests in water catchment, climate regulation, and unique evolutionary history.
Visit the Interpretation Centre: Enhance your understanding of Kanneliya's biodiversity at the small but informative site museum before your trek.
Waterfall Chasing: Hike to multiple waterfalls in one day, swimming in natural pools along the way.
Birdwatching: Bring binoculars to spot some of the 150+ bird species, including several endemics.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is during the dry season from December to March and July to September (avoiding the main rainy periods). Early morning (around 7–8 AM) is ideal to start your trek before heat and humidity intensify and to have waterfalls to yourself. The trails become slippery and leeches are more active after rain, so a dry spell of 3–4 days prior is perfect. Leeches are common year-round—wear leech socks.
Getting Around
Kanneliya is located in the Galle District, about a 1–1.5 hour drive from Galle city or 45 minutes from Hikkaduwa. Most visitors travel by tuk-tuk, scooter, or private vehicle from the southern coast. The entrance fee is modest compared to UNESCO cultural sites. Once inside, you must take a registered local guide (available at the entrance gate)—trails are unmarked, junctions confusing, and the forest is remote. A typical trek takes 2–5 hours depending on how many waterfalls you visit. Bring plenty of water, insect repellent, and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Mobile reception is very limited inside the reserve.
