Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to March (when the southwest coast is calm and sunny). Late afternoon (around 3–5 PM) is ideal to avoid midday heat, explore the interior streets, then finish with a sunset walk on the ramparts. The walls are flat and easy to walk on, but the sun can be intense—bring a hat and water.
Getting Around
Galle Fort is located within the modern city of Galle, about 2 hours south of Colombo by car or train. Most visitors arrive by train (the coastal route is scenic), taxi, or private vehicle. Once inside the fort, the entire site is completely walkable—car traffic is limited, and all key attractions are within a 15-minute stroll. The entrance to the fort itself is free (unlike Sigiriya), though some museums charge a small fee. Expect narrower streets and more crowds during December–January.
